Installing SuiteCRM for Small and Medium Sized Organizations

How to install SuiteCRM from your administration control panel.

Yes, it is very easy to install either of our 2 popular CRM (Customer Relationship Manager) applications, vTiger and SugarCRM, from our 'Applications Installer' from inside of your control panel. So why do something like install another CRM that isn't in our control panel? Well, the open source versions of both vTiger and SugarCRM seem to be reaching a point where they are no longer supported well which leaves a lot of unfixed bugs, problems, and complaints from users. I have been a vTiger user for many years and I have noticed that support for their community/open source version of their application has gotten worse through the years in support of their paid versions. This is understandable considering the amount of work that must be put into the application, however it doesn't do any good for you and me.

So during the last year I have been searching for another CRM to take its place and SuiteCRM is the best choice for small businesses that want to set up their own application within their own hosting environment. Their are also other ways to go that don't require you to install or host anything and we will talk about those along with the pros and cons in later articles. Later, we will also go into more of a comparison between the many different CRM's that I have tested to give you a better idea of why I settled on SuiteCRM. For now, you can follow this guide to install the application and test it for yourself.

You can view a features list here although these features focus on the paid versions of SuiteCRM. The free download link below in Step 1 is for the free version which includes all of the same features as the 'SuiteCRM:OnDemand' version. reference link

So dive in, follow the steps below and test your experience with SuiteCRM and decide if it's right for your organization.

Step 1. Download SuiteCRM here. As of this writing choose SuiteCRM 7.1 Editions -> Core Files -> SuiteCRM-7.14 MAX which includes both the Sales and Service versions of the suite. This will allow you to preview all the features that SuiteCRM offers. (You will just have to register and provide a valid email address. Don't worry, so far I have never received any annoying spam)

Step 2. Upload the file '' to your control panel via FTP (using Filezilla, etc) and either put it in your root folder ( or any other folder your would like.
Note: When you extract the file it will create its own folder - suitecrm-7.14/ - so it might be easiest to just upload the folder to your root directory so that when you install the application you can access it via or change the folder name to 'suitecrm','crm', or any other name you want.

Step 3. Extract the file ' Right click on the file -> click 'Extract'. Now relax, grab a cup of coffee or tea, and find something else to do for a minute because this extraction may take a while as it has a lot of files to extract.

Step 4. Open the url that SuiteCRM was installed ( or or any another name that you chose) and you should see the 'Setup Wizard' screen below. click 'Next'.


Step 5. On the 'Are you ready to install?' page, scroll to the bottom and click 'next'.

Step 6. On the 'License Acceptance' page click the 'I Accept' check box and click 'Next'.

Step 7. On the 'Installation Options' page, the 'Typical Install' option should already be checked. Click 'Next'.

Step 8. On the 'Database Type' page, click 'Next'.

Step 9. Now we will setup our database in our control panel. This preferrably could have been the first step before we began the installation process, however I chose to do it now so that after the database is created we can quickly add the information into our 'Database Configuration' page. Either way works.

Inside of your control panel,

a) go to 'Databases' -> 'MySQL Databases'.

b) click 'Create a New Database'.

c) enter a database name and password.

Step 10. Enter the information on the 'Database Configuration' page.

a) Database Name: the database name you just created in your control panel.

b) Host Name: change this to 'localhost'

c) Database Administrator Username: the same as the database name you just created in the control panel. [the exact same name as in step a) above]

d) Database Admin Password: the password of the database you created in the control panel.

e) SuiteCRM Database Username: for now we will just leave as is: 'Same as Admin User'

f) Choose Demo Data: you can choose whether or not to install the demo data. If this is purely for testing, probably choose 'Yes'. You can always delete the data after you've seen how everything fits together and it doesn't take long. If you want to start fresh and add new contacts, accounts and other info, choose 'No.

g) click 'Next'.

Step 11.Click 'I Accept' on the pop up.

Step 12. On the 'Site Configuration' page you can enter an Admin username. For now we will leave this as is. Also enter an admin password. Then click 'Next'.

Step 13. On the 'Confirm Settings' page, click 'Install'.

Step 14. On the 'Perform Setup' page click 'Next'

Step 15. Now we're all set. Just login with your username (admin) and password!


And that's it. SuiteCRM is quite easy to figure out and you can also find forum support here. Later I will discuss the features of this application compared to some of the other CRM's that are self hosted. I will also dive into some of the CRM's that you don't have to host and explain some of the pros and cons of using these.
